How my group organized the presentation on Summary.

9/17/2012

Participants: ZeYu Chen
                   ShaoHua Sun

We chose Summary for our topic because that summary is very common in our daily life. After that, we found the definition of summary and know summary is used to make the article more concise make us know the outline of article quickly.

Then, we tried to find the elements of a good summary. We saw the five important elements that are 1. A general outline of the paper. 2. No opinion. 3. Only include the most important details. 4. Identify the main idea or theme of the paper. 5. Only use the key words from paper. Actually, we searched lots of information about that, and we chose the most important one. For instance, we also put that how to write a general outline of the paper, it should include the main character, the main event in the paper, how the event developed and the setting of the paper.

At last, we started to find that how to write the summary. It can be divided into 7 steps.

First, divide and conquer. We need to focus on any headings and subheadings and also look at any bold-faced terms and make sure us understand them before we read.

Second, read the paper. We need to read straight through. At this point, we don’t need to stop to look up anything that gives us trouble—just get a feel for the author’s tone, style, and main idea.

Third, reread the paper. Underline topic sentences and key facts. Label areas that we want to refer to as we write our summary. Also label areas that should be avoided because the details—though they may be interesting—are too specific. Identify areas that we do not understand and try to clarify those points.

Next, write thesis statement. Write down the main idea of each section in one well-developed sentence. Make sure that what we include in our sentences are key points, not minor details and create a thesis statement that clearly communicates what the entire text was trying to achieve.

Now we start to write. Use the thesis statement as the introductory sentence of our summary, and other sentences can make up the body.

Then we need to check for accuracy. We should reread summary and make certain that we have accurately represented the author’s ideas and key points. Make sure that we have correctly cited anything directly quoted from the text. Also check to make sure that our text does not contain our own opinion on the piece.

Last but not the least is revising. We need to revise our summary for style, grammar, and punctuation. If we have time, give our summary to someone else to read. This person should be able to understand the main text based on your summary alone.

After our presentation, we hope that all of audience could understand what is summary, how importance is the summary and how to write the summary. Also, we may put on some example of good summary for audience to look. I think it will make you easier to learn.

LEO Topic Assignment : Writing a Summary

LEO Topic Assignment : Writing a Summary

I choose the Process for Writing a Summary to be my topic. In my opinion, it`s important for us to learn to writing a summarize of paper.

First of all, we need to know the importance of summary.

1. Summary can make the article more concise.

2. It can make us know the outline of article quickly.

And then, people need to learn how to write the summary:

1. Read the heading, subheadings and any bold-faced terms. It maybe include the most important topic in the paper.

2. Read the body. At this step, we just need to know the main idea and style of this paper.

3. Reread the whole paper. It should be active reading. We can underline the topic sentences and key words. After underline, we can write down the main topic in our own word.

4. Start to write the summary. In this step, we need to take care of the terminology. We can not use the same word from the article except some noun word. Also, the length of the summary should be much less than the original article.

5. Revise. When we are sure our summary is exactly true, we can just revise the paper for grammar, punctuation, style, spelling errors and so on. If feasible, we can ask someone to look at the summary. If he can easily find the main idea of the paper and tell the true story of it, I think the summary is successful.

At last, I think people always use summary in our daily lives. For instance, we may use summary to tell something happened to our friend or we may use it to convey someone`s words. But for summarizing a paper. We need to follow the steps above to get the better effect.

Critique

My best author: Wonderful Travel.

This story tell me a guy in U.S. and he travelled to many different countries, almost all over the world. I think it is meaningful to people. Travelling should be encaraged. At the last paragraph of his story, "Overall, travel all the world can exercise himself and travelling can also broaden our eyesight. " I think it is a good conclusion. All of the items we need write in our stories are appear naturly in his story. Some of them are souvenir, some of them the author create them to real people and farm.

My weakest author:  Unforgettable visit .

First of all, the format of his story is really wrong. He used different size of the words and different kinds of words. In his story, there is just one paragraph. I think readers will not be interested in this kind of story. At the same time, he just put the 13 items in his story bluntly. I can not find any meaningful and useful points in his story. And the last weak thing he did in his story is there is too much talk in his story. It`s not easy for readers to understand.

Inception On Me

Inception On Me

One day, in my physics class, due to all night watching the soccer game last night I was very sleepy. I was playing in the hands of ruler and a Singapore commemorative coins from my brother. The sound is getting smaller and smaller, along with teacher lectures my consciousness gradually blurred.
Suddenly, I found I somehow entered a large conference room, an Asian woman sitting in the center of her back to me, there was a sculpture of an Africa man in his hand and she seems to be thinking about something. At this time, she turned to me, and I sat opposite him with gestures. This Asian woman took out a piece of paper seems to be an agreement, and she wanted me to go find that Africa man and get a small plate from him. I'm curious coincidence that agreement was signed, and the Asian woman took out a seal stamped his name in agreement. She put her purse to me, told me at the same time, "less than a critical moment not to open the wallet." I gripped the leather wallet out of the conference room, and started on the road looking for the Africans.
One night shortly after, I passed by a exhibition hall. In front of it, there was a blanket made of very rare animal fur. Out of curiosity, I went into the Hall. I suddenly found the face which I found, that Africans are standing venues central hand that odd little dish, it seems, are to introduce people and visitors. I found the target in sight, quickly into the crowd, grabbed the plate from that African`s hands, but I did not think he took out a gun and shoot me directly. After that shooting, I felt that my consciousness was fading, I seem to see the my coin was spinning on the ground, then I lost consciousness.
I did not know how long after, I woke up and found myself lying on the bed, I took out the wallet on the shirt pocket, found above playing a hole to open the wallet, found there what I desperately to win that dish, but the bullet was embedded in the inside.
I got up on the table a little teapot filled with water, and a bowl of chestnut, and that caught my attention, the rotation has been an edge that teapot Singapore commemorative coins. I grabbed it, and put it in his pocket. Out of the door, is a traditional Spanish farm, has bouts of beating drums sound in my ear, looking back over the past, that there was a strangely dressed men beat drums in a canoe made of wood. He saw me, stopped drumming and walk to me. He looked at me with a smile, it seems that he understood all these things through. I asked him about that, but he just put me again into the room and come up with a strange head statue. I look closely, found that this is the Asian woman signed a contract with me. He said only one sentence, "she is the god here,we need to worship," after listening, I was very surprised, and that the men play the drums out of the room, shut the door, leaving I continue to think that. I get the teapot on the table and drank water. However, the water seems put sleeping pills, I again fainted.
When I woke up again, I found that I went back to the conference room, I saw that Asian woman sitting in front of me, her hand and helped me up. She looked at me with a kind face, and said thank you, and he left hand holding strange saucer, the right hand of the coins returned to me when I was going to ask her about the whole story.
I suddenly shaking woke up and found that I just fell asleep in physics class, this time the class was over. When I was going to laugh at myself, I found theSingapore commemorative coins are still spinning on the desk.
